Antenatal education

 Childbirth Education: Antenatal education and transitions of maternity care in New Zealand

  • The aim of this report is to help improve and strengthen the quality of childbirth education in New Zealand. The report, by researcher Dr Sarah Dwyer, was funded by the Families Commission in association with Parents Centres New Zealand Inc and the Parenting Council, May 2009.

SANDS (Stillbirth and Newborn Death Support) New Zealand
  • Network of parent-run, non-profit groups supporting families who have experienced the death of a baby. Over 25 groups/contact people around the country.
SIDS New Zealand
  • National organisation established to provide services for families and communities who have had children of any age die suddenly and/or unexpectedly of any cause including SIDS.
Skylight
  • Not for profit national organisation that provides unique and specialised support to children, young people and their families/whanau through change, loss, trauma and grief - whatever the cause.

Victim Support

  • Support for people affected by trauma or crime. Service is available 24/7 and Victim Support volunteers are available throughout New Zealand.
Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC)
  • If you have lost a family member as a result of an injury, ACC may be able to provide help eg. funeral grant
Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ)
  • Work and Income may be able to provide income support to people who need it. In addition, a Funeral Grant may be available to the partner, child, parent or guardian of someone who has died, to help towards the cost of the funeral. This grant is income and asset tested.
Miscarriage Support Auckland Inc.
  • A small independent group of women volunteers of various ages who have experienced the loss of their own babies and would like to provide emotional support and information for women and their families during and after miscarriage and subsequent pregnancies.

Breastfeeding

La Leche League
  • Pronounced "Lah Lay-chay League". An international organisation offering information and encouragement, primarily through personal help, to women who want to breastfeed their babies.

Child advocacy

Child Poverty Action Group 
  • Working toward the elimination of child poverty in Aotearoa New Zealand through independent research and education.

The Children's Social Health Monitor 

  • Developed in 2009 by a Working Group of health professionals from a range of organisations with an interest in child health in response to deteriorating economic conditions in New Zealand and Australia. To monitor the impact of the recession on child wellbeing in New Zealand. Will report on an annual basis until the economic position of New Zealand’s children improves appreciably.

Well Child / Tamariki Ora

  • To assist Well Child / Tamariki Ora Health providers to work together with families to provide the best support, health promotion and prevention for all New Zealand Children under 5.

Coronial process

Coronial Services Unit 
  • Serves the community through investigating circumstances and causes of death in a respectful and professional manner. The findings of these investigations will be used to make recommendations for the improvement of public safety and to prevent deaths in similar circumstances.

Maternal Health

Maternal and Child Oral Health - Systematic Review and Analysis - A report for the New Zealand Ministry of Health

  • This report looks at the evidence for pre and post-natal factors that affect the future oral health of children.  It includes a survey of the literature on the causes and indicators of early childhood caries, and the effectiveness of different strategies to improve infant oral health. The implications of the findings for future research, policy, and service delivery are discussed.

Maternal Health in the Pacific
  • A new report on maternal health in the Pacific from the New Zealand Parliamentarians’ group on Population and Development (NZPPD) calls on the New Zealand, Australian and Pacific Island governments to take immediate action to improve the maternal health situation in the Pacific.

 


Mortality Reviews and Data

Perinatal and Maternal Mortality Review Committee (PMMRC)

  • An independent committee that advises the Minster of Health on how to reduce the number of deaths of babies and mothers in New Zealand. Has produced a number of reports which can be accessed through their website.
Child and Youth Mortality Review Committee (CYMRC) 

  • Established by the Minister of Health to review deaths of children and young people aged 28 days to 24 years. Aims to find ways to prevent such deaths in the future. Has produced a number of reports which can be accessed through their website.
Fetal and Infant Deaths 2005 
  • Annual statistical publication that collates and analyses information on the causes of fetal and infant deaths registered in New Zealand.

Biblical precepts about raising children, which emphasise positive nurturing and non-violent discipline, which at heart means teaching and showing rather than punishment are outlined. Pacific Heartbeat 
  • Pacific Heartbeat provides a range of "by Pacific for Pacific" health care and preventive services, which are aimed at improving the heart health and wellbeing of Pacific peoples. These include: Smokefree awareness and Smoking Cessation Services, Nutrition services and Physical Activity promotion.
The Quit Group 
  • Charitable trust set up to run quit smoking programmes in New Zealand, including the national free telephone support Quitline.

The Auckland Stillbirth Study See Cure Kids
  • Researcher: Tomasina Stacey. Hopes to reduce the number of stillbirths that occur in New Zealand by identifying and quantifying likely risks which cause late stillbirth. Aims to isolate risks that can be modified to prevent late stillbirth and will examine the prevalence of risk factors in the major ethnic groups (Maori, Pacific Island and European).

Australia and NZ Stillbirth Alliance

  • Collaborates with a wide range of complimentary organisations and groups such as parent organisations and professional colleges to ensure maximum benefit for future families. As a regional office of International Stillbirth Alliance (ISA), ANZSA focuses on areas which are of relevance to the ANZ setting, while contributing to the global burden of stillbirth.
